I'm still tweaking around some stuff with the site design,
but while I try to remember all the fancy CSS I learned in the spring that I've already forgotten,
I thought I would catch up with some of the projects I did this summer.

First up, this summertime herringbone quilt!

I made this quilt for a dear friend of mine who got married this summer,
and I have got to say, out of all the crafts I've crafted in my time,
this quilt is by far my proudest crafting accomplishment!

In three short weeks,
made even shorter by the fact that I only had nap times and bed times to work,
I was able to cut, piece, machine quilt, and hand bind this beauty.

At 55" x 63", it's a perfect sized couch snuggle movie quilt,
and the largest project I have ever started, and most importantly, completed.

I used half square triangles to create the herringbone effect,
and picked out fabrics that matched her wedding colors.
I just LOVE how cheery the yellows, corals, and pinks turned out together!
Perfect for my oh so cheery friend :]

This project has become the perfect example of why I love handmade. The whole time I was working on this quilt, I was able to think about my dear friend,
how much our friendship has meant to me and how excited I am for this new stage in her life.
I was able to stitch every single one of those good thoughts and well wishes into this quilt.

I also love the thought that quilts are such an heirloom,
that there is the possibility of her grandbabies someday snuggling with this quilt
as she tells them about the days she and her husband fell in love.

I've always been intimidated by quilting because of the time needed to finish such a large scale project
(I've never been great at finishing what I start...)
but being able to make this quilt has definitely changed that.
I still love the expression of creativity possible with making clothes and crafts,
but I've become very intrigued by the range of emotions it's possible to express with a simple quilt.

I will definitely be making a few more... ;]

  3. Beautiful! I'm slowly cutting out the squares for my first ever quilt. If it turns out half as good as this I'll be very pleased!

  4. What a great quilt! I love the design. The reason I don't like a lot of quilts is that they look so out dated, unlike this quilt. Did you consider making strips of fabric, sewing them together then cutting them at a diagonal to save some of the cutting?

    1. Oh Michelle, that really does sound so much easier, haha! Considering how new I am to quilting, that didn't even cross my mind. But I will definitely use that trick for next time!

    1. Sure thing! I'm pretty sure I used 1/2 yard of five different patterned fabrics and 2 1/2 yards of white, but I also remember changing some things as I went. I have been thinking I should write up a full free pattern for this quilt, is that something you'd be interested in?
